Megadeth und Old-School-Death-Metal-Kult: Die neue Legacy-Ausgabe #160 führt nach den Feiertagen zurück in die stählerne Spur – mit einer Mischung aus großen Namen, Szene-Geschichte und spannenden Gegenwartsbeobachtungen. Im Mittelpunkt steht eine umfangreiche Titelstory zu Megadeth: Im Zuge des neuen Albums kündigte Dave Mustaine an, dass es sich dabei um das letzte Studioalbum der Band handeln wird. Im Legacy-Soundcheck setzte sich die Platte direkt auf Platz 1 – ein mehr als würdiger Abschied. Für die Titelstory sprach die Redaktion ausführlich mit Dave Mustaine selbst sowie mit den weiteren Bandmitgliedern über das Album, die Vergangenheit und das Vermächtnis einer der prägendsten Thrash-Metal-Bands überhaupt.
Einen zweiten, ebenso gewichtigen Schwerpunkt bildet das 16-seitige Death-Metal-Special, das sich einem Schlüsselmoment der Genre-Geschichte widmet: dem Jahr 1991, in dem sich Death Metal endgültig etablierte und eine Vielzahl heute legendärer Alben erschien. Das Special beleuchtet, was damals in der Szene geschah, ordnet die 40 wichtigsten Veröffentlichungen dieses Jahres aus heutiger Sicht ein und lässt zahlreiche Ikonen des Genres selbst zu Wort kommen. In vielen Interviews erinnern sie sich an ihre frühen Bandtage, schildern Hintergründe, Entwicklungen und Anekdoten – ein Rundumschlag für alle, die Death Metal nicht nur hören, sondern verstehen wollen.
Generell ist die Old-School-Ausrichtung in dieser Ausgabe stark präsent – von Veteranen, die bereits Anfang der Neunziger aktiv waren, bis hin zu einer jungen Generation, die sich als respektvolle Erbverwalter klassischer Tugenden versteht. Zu Letzteren zählen Tailgunner, die mit ihrem zweiten Album ein kompromissloses Heavy-Metal-Statement vorlegen. Death Dealers Line-up hingegen wartet mit Szenegrößen wie Sean Peck und Ross The Boss auf. Beide Bands werden in ausführlichen Interviews vorgestellt. Ergänzt wird dieser Block durch Gespräche mit Slaughterday, Bitterness und Total Annihilation, die auf jeweils eigene Weise die härtere Gangart pflegen und ihre musikalischen Motive offenlegen.
Abseits dieser klaren thematischen Linien setzt Legacy #160 gezielt ungewöhnliche Akzente: Jérôme Reuter (Rome) gibt in einem dreiseitigen Interview tiefe Einblicke in sein Denken und Schaffen. Ein weiteres großes Gespräch widmet sich Sir Hannes und dem neuen Album von Phantoms Of Future, inklusive außergewöhnlicher spiritueller Verbindungen. Powerwolf sind ebenfalls mit einer dreiseitigen Story vertreten, die ihre ausverkaufte Show in der Münchner Olympiahalle nachzeichnet und den Blick hinter die Kulissen ihres Metal-Erfolgsmodells erlaubt.

Megadeth and Old School Death Metal cult: The new Legacy issue #160 brings readers back on track after the holidays, combining major names, scene history, and compelling observations of the present. At its core stands an extensive title story on Megadeth: In the context of the new album, Dave Mustaine announced that it will be the band’s final studio release. The record went straight to number one in the Legacy Soundcheck – a more than worthy farewell. For the cover feature, the editorial team spoke at length with Dave Mustaine himself, as well as with the other band members, about the album, the past, and the legacy of one of the most influential Thrash Metal bands of all time.
An equally weighty second focus is the large 16-page Death Metal special, dedicated to a pivotal moment in the genre’s history: the year 1991, when Death Metal firmly established itself and a multitude of now-legendary albums were released. The special examines what was happening in the scene at the time, reassesses the 40 most important releases of that year from today’s perspective, and gives the floor to numerous icons of the genre. In many interviews, they look back on their early band days, share background stories, developments, and anecdotes – a comprehensive overview for anyone who wants to do more than just listen to Death Metal, but truly understand it.
Overall, an old-school spirit runs strongly through this issue – from veterans who were already active in the early ’90s to a younger generation that sees itself as respectful custodians of classic virtues. The latter includes Tailgunner, who deliver an uncompromising Heavy Metal statement with their second album. Death Dealer's lineup features scene heavyweights such as Sean Peck and Ross The Boss. Both bands are presented in extensive interviews. This block is rounded out by conversations with Slaughterday, Bitterness, and Total Annihilation, each of whom embraces a harder edge in their own way and sheds light on their musical motivations.
Beyond these clearly defined thematic lines, Legacy #160 sets deliberate and unusual accents: Jérôme Reuter (Rome) offers deep insights into his thinking and creative work in a three-page interview.
